Endodontic Re-treatments:
Root Canals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Why do I need a root canal re-treatment?

As it could happen with any medical or in this case, dental procedure. The tooth sometimes does not heal as expected after the initial treatment.

  • Sometimes curved or narrow canals are not treated during the initial procedure.
  • The placement of a restoration or dental crowns were delayed following endodontic treatment.
  • The anatomy of the canal was complicated and went undetected during the first procedure.
  • and many other unexpected things could happen.

In other cases, a new problem can jeopardize a tooth that was successfully treated. For example:

  • Root canal filling material could be exposed to bacteria due to new decay. This may cause infection in the tooth.
  • A loose, broken, or cracked crown or filling can expose the tooth or teeth to new infections.
  • Tooth could sustain fractures.

What happens during a root canal re-treatment?

During retreatment, the endodontist will reopen your tooth and remove the filling materials that were placed in the root canals during the first procedure. The endodontist then carefully examines the tooth, looking for additional canals or new infection. The endodontist then removes any infection, cleans and shapes the canals, and places new filling materials. The opening is then sealed with a temporary filling. Once the tooth heals, a new crown or other restoration is placed on the tooth to protect it.
